With the recent American TV schedule making as much sense as a four year old smoking cigars while driving a space shuttle I went on a quest in search of some new viewing material. Along my journey I found both old and new shows to pick up. Read on for a few recommendations.
The Unusuals

At first I didn't pick this up simply because it was another cop show and I have already seen too many of them lately (powering through The Shield seasons 6 and 7) but then I read some reviews and it sounded a lot less like a cop show and a lot more not-shit. Now, I'm hooked on it. Sure there's the fact they're cops and do cop things like chase robbers, but the main focus is on the characters and this is where it shines.
The characters deserve a paragraph on their own as they're simply great. The underlying theme of the show is "everyone has secrets" and this mob definitely have their fair share to go around. It is a great watch and every minute is filled with character development or comedy. Be it coming to grips with terminal illness by putting yourself in harms way and miraculously surviving, managing a sting operation on an underground death shop and it going awry, battling your own ego or digging up dirt on a partner, it has not failed to deliver yet.
Every member of the cast fits their role perfectly, a few names include Amber Tamblyn on lead (we first see her as a hooker), Jeremy Renner (who reminds me of Brendan Fraser) as her mysterious partner, Harold Perrineau (Michael from Lost) as the bloke scared of death and Adam Goldberg who has an extremely dirty mo.
Better off Ted

"The show is a satirical office comedy that focuses on Ted, the head of Research and Development at Veridian Dynamics. Veridian Dynamics is a large unscrupulous multinational corporation that values profits over morals." - wikipedia
Ted is half an hour filled with Arrested Development style comedy, satire, random happenings, crazy office politics and far fetched plot-lines. Portia de Rossi plays the successful, emotionless and conscience-free boss to a tee. Watch the start of the trailer, but not too much or you'll spoil some episodes.
Harpers Island

Finally something different on TV! This is a murder mystery based on a group of rich people staying at Harpers Island for a wedding reception (or something) seven (or some number) years after five (or some other number) people were brutally murdered. A classic who-done-it tale that i'm sure will take twists and turns and change our minds many times as to who the culprit is. One of the group's mother was killed in the slaughter and many of the characters lived on the island or worked there during the summer so there is plenty of history, friction, and unseen bonds between them.
It changes up the pace i'm used to watching, isn't as obviously obvious as retarded teen-dramas with spoiled ginus and has a fair share of hotties in it (and pool scenes). Chris Gauthier (Vincent from Eureka) also shows his face. It is refreshing to watch this just because it isn't a medical drama, police show or shitty american sit-com.
No Heroics

A British comedy based on the every-day woes of a group of off-duty superheroes in a town just like any other, but with superheroes. It holds nothing back and is crude, gritty and just plain fun to watch. One of the most memorable superheroes is the retired gay Spaniard 'Timebomb', who can see sixty seconds into the future, is a torture expert and druggie. It's a show that pulls out all the stops and great for a quick laugh.
That's it for now, I highly recommend all of the above shows so give them a shot instead of grabbing another terrible episode of Heroes, Prison Break or whatever the over-hyped and under-delivering show is at the moment.
Until next time,
